Have you ever heard the advice ‘It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle’? I don’t agree. Myself, I prefer to take it a bit deeper. It’s not a lifestyle, it’s a mindset.
What determines our lifestyle? What determines anything in our lives? It’s our thoughts. Pop psychology has proven the whole thought creates action, repeated action creates habits, and habits shape circumstance time and time again, yet still we keep working from the outside in.
Lifestyle is lovely, but it refers to the style of your life, not the content of your thoughts. If you really want to change the way you eat and get alllllll the amazing benefits – a toned body, glowing skin, and a positive mindset to name a few – you need to address the way you think about food.
We can get up earlier, move neighbourhoods, shop at a different grocery store, and drink more water – all indicators of lifestyle – but if we keep the same mentality around food, we will only be making temporary changes.
The first step in my Eight Steps to Natural Eating, a free guide that will be out later this month, is a commitment and a desire to change.
The second is to be aware of the urge to diet. Once we can catch ourselves going on a diet, program, or a cleanse, we can tune in with ourselves, and just start paying attention to our body’s signals.
That’s the difference between Natural Eating and The Diet Cycle: Dieting is based on imposition – forcing rules and restrictions on yourself for a designated period of time. Natural Eating is based on intuition – listening for your body’s cues around when, how much, and what to eat.
This is the biggest shift you can make when changing the way you eat for the long term. A mindset of intuition over imposition will help you more than any superficial lifestyle change you can make.
Stay tuned for the rest of the steps, and an update on The Diet Monster, coming soon. Oh, and I featured this gorgeous picture of Lady Gaga because you can see the confidence in her eyes. She’s all about the mindset.[wysija_form id=”1″]
