Alternative milks are so funny. They, of course, are dairy free…but like so many alternative foods are filled with yucky ingredients wearing a healthy mask.
I was whining to my good friend and nutrition diva Cari yesterday about these added evils, and she’s all ‘Why don’t you make homemade hemp milk? Or oat milk?’. Smart cookie, that one.
This homemade hemp milk, which also has soaked oats (why not do both?), not only tastes waaaay better than the coconut milk I usually use (with carageenan in it), but it’s creamier, more nutritious, and only has…wait for it…three ingredients.
Well, technically four, if you include the tiny dash of apple cider vinegar I added, but point is, it’s simple, healthy, and SUPER easy to make in your blender.
Ingredients for about 750mL of Dreamy Hemp Milk
1/2 cup of organic hemp hearts
1/2 cup of steel cut oats
3 cups of water
optional: about a tsp of apple cider vinegar
First off, soak your hemp and oats together with the water and ACV for a couple hours.
Combine your soaked ingredients in a high powered blender, blend on high for about 30-45 seconds. If you have a cheesecloth, you’ll yield more milk, but I only had my strainer, which I was fine with because the clumpy leftovers tasted like heaven. Can you tell I’m on an elimination diet? 🙂
I put the mixture into the strainer with a large bowl underneath, and let it sit for a few minutes, then pushed it around with my hands. Ghetto, yeah, but it worked.
It was so frothy and delicious. Perfect, like PERFECT, for smoothies, soaking chia seeds, oatmeals, overnight oats, and like a million other things where milk is required. When I took my first sip of it, I actually said, out loud, ‘No you didn’t‘. I’m pretty jazzed about this recipe guys.
Speaking of jazz, you can church this recipe up with some cardamom, cinnamon, dates, a touch of sea salt…as you wish. Mine was one of those experiments that happened to turn out like a dream, so I didn’t bother with adding anything.
